Sequal Diva freestyle

Sometimes 2 does make it right!
Sequal was put together in 1984 by producer Lewis Martineé just a lil' before he rounded up the girls for his next group Expose'. Sequal was made up of 2 hot girls: the strong-vocaled Maria Christensen (blonde), & the sexy-smooth vocaled Angie (brunette). To many, Sequal was an awesome Freestyle/Dance-Pop act that went somewhat overlooked. Their first single was the 1985 club classic "It's Not Too Late". It was the first Freestyle/Miami record to carry that unique sound that was again heard on Expose's "Point Of No Return" & "Exposed To Love", as well as other Martineé productions that followed. According to Martineé, Sequals' new debut sound was their introduction. "It's Not Too Late" seemed to be cultivated first in NYC's clubs. And although hailing from Miami, Sequal made alot of noise in NYC, & LA.Working with other hot Freestyle & Dance producers such as "Little" Louie Vega, Michael Morejon, Mantronik-(India/Nocera/Hanson & Davis), Robert Rodriguez, & Danny Tenaglia, they released some kool trax such as "Tell The Truth", "She Don't Want You", "Tell Him I Called", & the bass pumping "I'm Over You".
Their first & only (now hard to find) 1988 self-titled debut album was packed with quality freestyle jams. Including "Took Another Chance" featuring Nancy Martinez. Even though on a major label (Capitol), it was always weird as to why they weren't bigger than they were. The album was very versatile with Freestyle & Pop-R&B songs, as well as slammin' vocal arrangements, that would've appealed to a large audience. But of course, all good things come to an end. It is uncertain as to why this Diva-duo dissappeared from the scene, but some of their classic singles as well as new songs in the past recent years can be heard on various compilations. Sequal is definately a mark in Freestyle music history, more than people think. They will not be forgotten, which is why this page was made.
In 1993, Maria released her solo album on Atlantic Records.
In the late 90s Maria became the lead singer of the female Dance trio, 3rd Party. They released club jams including a house remake of Chaka Khan's "Love Is Alive", & appeared on VH-1's The RuPaul Show.
Their album included a song written by Maria entitled "Waiting For Tonight" which was later handed to Jennifer Lopez & became one of J-Lo's signature hits. They also had a song on the motion picture soundtrack for the hit comedy "Kiss Me Guido". Today Angie's whereabouts are not exactly known, but Maria is still active with her music & other projects, as well as writing for artists that have included Celine Dion & *NSYNC. Sweet Sensation

(From L to R: Sheila Vega, "Betty D" Lebron, Margie Fernandez)

Originally named "Sweet Temptation", this group had their first 1986 hit single "Hooked On You" on Next Plateau Records, & was then told by The Temptation's management that they could not use the name. So they changed it to Sweet Sensation, & were then signed to Atlantic/Atco Records. Then in 1987 released their 2nd single "Victim Of Love (Goodbye Baby)", followed by "Take It While It's Hot", & "Never Let You Go".
In 1988, their full-length album "Take It While It's Hot" was released. Five out of the 8 cuts on the album were hit singles.
The original members were Betty D, Margie, & her sister Mari, who appeared on the first photo-cover version of the "Take It While It's Hot" album. Sheila replaced her in 1989, & the album was then re-released with the photo pictured above.
Their next single was the Latin-spiced "Sincerely Yours" feat Romeo J.D. as the Rap vocalist. Then a new remix/remake of "Hooked On You" was issued in 1989, along with a new video for the song which already had one back in 1986 with the original girls.Sweet Sensation were probably the most Latin influenced of the girl-group Dance/Freestyle acts of their time. Riding on the success of their debut album, in 1990 the girls released their 2nd album & new single both titled "Love Child". The song was an up-beat cover of The Supremes 1968 hit.
The next single was the groups first ballad release, "If Wishes Came True". It soared to #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts, drawing them to a wider audience, & making the girls house-hold names.
The girls were nervous as to their new sound had turned more R&B-Pop, but the album still treated old fans to some great Dance tunes. "Each & Every Time" was another single from this album.
In 1990, Sweet Sensation then released "The Hit Singles Collection" - a collection of their music video hits. In 1991 "Time To Jam! (The Remix Album)" came out, & carried new remixes of the classic hits, along with a Carlos Berrios remix of the non-single 2nd album track "I Surrender".
Not long after Margie & Sheila were replaced by 3 new members, making them a quartet. They did a few shows together, & then Betty D was said to go solo. By 1992 Sweet Sensation seemed to just dissappear, & was never heard of again.
It was never mentioned as to what happenned to this group, or why, but there has been a rumour that one of the members recently said she is glad it is all over. How true that is, we're not sure, but many fans would love to know what they are up to today, & if ever possible, see a reunion someday.

Brenda K. Starr Diva Freestyle

Brenda K. Starr started her career by making a demo of Stacy Lattisaw's "Love On A Two Way Street". She started hanging out in places where she felt someone was bound to hear her. In the early 80's, Brenda then helped out picking up cups at a local roller skating rink in NYC, where she bumped into Harry Bellafonte. She then landed a dancing & singing role in his 1984 breakdancing film: "Beat Street". Not long after, at the age of 16, she was signed to Mirage Records, & released her 1985 debut album "I Want Your Love", which included the Freestyle classic "Pickin' Up Pieces", as well as "Suspicion", & the title track that was a remake of Chic's Disco hit.Brenda then was signed to MCA Records in 1986, & shortly after released her 2nd album in 1987 simply titled "Brenda K. Starr". This album turned Brenda into an international star & she got to tour with many artists including New Kids On The Block. The album contained the singles "What You See Is What You Get", "Breakfast In Bed", & the Billboard Top-Ten ballad hit "I Still Beleive".
It also had the Freestyle jam "Over & Over" which was later re-done by Pajama Party in 1989, & "You Should Be Loving Me" which appeared on the soundtrack & movie "She's Out Of Control" starring Tony Danza.
Brenda also had a song called "Sata" in the film & soundtrack to "Lambada".
Around this time, she had become great friends with her then back-up singer & godmother to her 1st daughter, Mariah Carey. As many know, Brenda is in part responsible for Mariah's career, & Mariah thanks her mentor on her 1999 "#1's" album, as well as remakes "I Still Beleive". Brenda appeared with Mariah a few times throughout her "#1's Tour".

In 1990, Brenda does a duet with fellow Freestyle artist George Lamond titled "No Matter What" for his album. The song would later be remade by Latin/Salsa group DLG. She signed with Epic Records in 1991 & released her 3rd album "By Heart". It diddnt do as well commercially, but contained the single "If You Could Read My Mind". Taking a break from full-length albums, Brenda released various singles during the mid 90's.
Some of which were a jumpin' Latin-House version of the classic "Cuba" (with El Mariachi), featured vocalist on Hip-Hop/Reggae star Mad Lion's single "Double Trouble", (both in 1996), & in 1997, the smooth electro-trance-breakbeat "Only Love" for the "Dance-Trip 2000" compilation.
Between the last 2 singles, Brenda made a dramatic change... she switched to Salsa music!
Releasing her 1st Latin album "Te Sigo Esperando", she soared back up on the charts & was introduced to new fans. This album is probably one of her best, which had "Herida", & No Necesito". The string of hits continued in 1998 when she released her 2nd Salsa album "No Lo Voy Olvidar", which has "Si Me Preguntan Por Ti", & a Spanglish Salsa version of "I Still Beleive".
Her 3rd Latin album "Petalos De Fuego" (2000) was an ok effort, & included a cover of Billy Joel's "Honesty". In 2000, she released a Dance-Techno-House maxi-single "Hold Me" on an independent label, which got major club play internationally. Now on the Sony Music label, Brenda is back with her 'still-hott' 2002/2003 Latin release "Temptation". One of her best albums to date, it has many great numbers in both English & Spanish, ...including the hit "Por Ese Hombre" with Salsa greats Tito Nieves & Victor Manuelle, and her version of the song that started it all: "Love On A Two Way Street"! Also now available is another CD titled: "All Time Greatest Hits", along with a DVD of the same title that features all her Salsa music video hits. No one knows what to expect of this Puerto Rican-Jewish Diva next, but im pretty sure it's gonna be good!

They then released their 3rd album simply titled "Expose" in 1992. Releasing: "I'll Never Get Over You, Getting Over Me", "I Wish The Phone Would Ring", & "As Long As I Can Dream".
This album directed them in a "Adult Contemporary" direction, alienating their core Dance-Pop-Freestyle fans. In 1995, they released their "Greatest Hits" - (pictured left, with Ann, Jeanette, & Kelly), containing all the best, including new songs, & modern Dance-Remixes of their classics!

Today, Gioia got her voice back, she had a rock band called WETT, but now is touring solo taking on today's Dance-Club market, with new grooves, as well as performing Expose's gems. Please visit her site below @ : Exposé is OFFICIALLY BACK as of summer 2003, with Jeanette, Ann, & Kelly! Gioia will also be performing with them at select shows. According to Jeanette, Gioia & Kelly will switch on stage when Gioia comes to perform her parts.
Even more exciting, the girls have won the legal rights to the name "Exposé", which the girls really deserve! :)
(Which was part of a problem back then).
Now, the girls will be performing their classics, & are considering working on some new songs as well. Let's see what happen  ....  www.gioiabruno.com

Expose Ann Curless & Jeanette Jurado & Gioia Bruno.

In this pic, & the one below, we have the "main" Expose' members. From L to R: Ann Curless, Jeanette Jurado, & Gioia Bruno.

These 3 carried the group from where the original 3 left off. From 1986-1991 These were the girls we were used to seeing in the videos & album covers. They also resemble the originals!
Their 1st album "Exposure" had the hits: "Come Go With Me", Seasons Change, "Let Me Be The One", & a remake of "Point Of No Return", leaving "Exposed To Love" the only song on the album with the vocals recorded by the original 3.
By their 2nd album in 1989, "What You Don't Know" - (pictured at right), - in the order of pic: Jeanette, Gioia, & Ann, had become international stars.
This album included hits: "What You Don't Know", "When I Looked At Him" & "Tell Me Why".
They then released their video collection: "Video Exposure". Soon, Gioia had to leave the group in 1991 due to irrparable throat damage.
She was then replaced by Kelly Moneymaker.

Expose' Although based on the 80's, this site will include divas from other past & present decades.

From L to R: Laurie Miller, Alejandra "Ale' " Lorenzo, & Sandra Cassanas - (later solo diva "Sandee' ").

This is a pic of the Original (1984-86) Expose', who at first went by the name of X-Posed. They released the hits: "Point Of No Return" & "Exposed To Love". The Miami-based trio was produced by Lewis Martinee'. This group was much more trendy. With wild make up designs across face, crazy fashions, etc. ( Unlike their later members who were still "hott", ...but more toned down.)

Since they are Freestyle's 1st girl-group, I put them first.

For more info & pics on the Original Expose', please visit original member Laurie's website below:
